Location: Between Wee Jasper and Yass on the back road crossing a bridge of the Burrinjuck Dam & Murrumbidgee River, New South Wales

Event: Sighting

Date: Summer 1987

Terrain: Treeless

Witness: Mr. J. Basham

[Wee Jasper is a small picturesque village of about 100 people in a pretty valley at the foot of the Brindabella Ranges, on the backwaters of Burrinjuck Dam. It is located 336 km south-west of Sydney and 54 km south-west of Yass along a partially unsealed road].

During the Christmas break of 1986-87 and 19 years old at the time, Mr. Basham was on a camping trip with his Girlfriend, family and friends at Wee Jasper when during the night, he was suddenly hit by a severe Asthma attack and couldn't breathe. Being in such a bad state, he had little other alternative but to head to the closest Hospital in Yass, less that an hour's drive away. It was after midnight, the rest of the party were sleeping and he decided to make the trip by himself.

"It was about 3am and I was driving towards the bridge when I saw what I thought were headlights on another car coming the other way and I slowed down.

Then as I got closer, I realised it wasn't a car, but enormous bright reflecting orange eyes of something very large on my left side heading down under the bridge and watching me the whole time. Out of pure curiosity, I stopped the car 3/4's on the way across the bridge to see if I could see it again.

As I was sitting there, a huge hairy hand reached up and clutched the guard rail next to me. It had climbed up a pole on the side of the bridge and clambered over the rail and stood beside my car looking at me and growling.

I was s**ting myself! This thing was huge! It must have stood about 12ft tall because it's head almost touched the top rail of the bridge beams.

At first I thought it was a Grizzly Bear, but it couldn't have been because it had more of a Human face. It was kind of stooped or leaning forward a little.

It was a massive creature. It had shaggy black hair that looked shinny because it was wet from being in the water, but the biggest thing that got me was the FANGS! They were huge.

I had really horrible feelings run through me. It then started to walk around to the front of my car in a kind of hunched fashion, not standing completely upright if you know what I mean and it starred down at me through my windscreen, bearing its teeth and growling.

It was now standing at the front of my car, right in the beam of my headlights. I sat there in shock as it towered over the car. Another thing I remember was as it moved into the light, was that the massive reflecting eyes shrunk. I still remember that.... It really looked very Human in the face, but those fangs told a different story.

From there, it went to the other side of the bridge and jumped over. That was the last I saw of it.

I returned to the spot the next day hoping to see something, but there was nothing there. I told my family and friends about it at the time and still bring it up in conversations with workmates and alike.

Some believe me, while others seem to think it's a joke, but it's not. I saw it right in front of me".
