It would have been back in 1976, we were driving back from Queensland. Every year my family would do a trip to Noosa. It was two days up there and two days drive back again.

My mother’s recollection was of me being 7 years old, turning to her and saying – Mum, do we have Bears here in Australia? And she said no we don’t and I said, well I just saw one. She said don’t be ridiculous and I was pretty much shouted down by my entire family calling me stupid!

A couple of years later my mother was reading the paper and came across an article about the Yowie and said ‘My God, that’s the same area where you said you saw that Bear’.

I remember looking over a fairly sparsely treed piece of land and there was a log. He was partially bent over picking something up off the ground. He was a dark brown or blackish colour and I had a good enough look at him to think it was a Bear. I told everyone in the car and they wouldn’t believe me. I even asked my mother to stop the car and drive back so I could show them.

He was hunched over like he was picking something up and it was quite a big thing. It’s a memory that has stuck with me for a long time.

And again, it was some time later that my mother was reading the paper and said that is exactly where you saw it. Then I didn’t look so stupid.
