I heard the story about the guy with the truck at Canungra (Witheren), and that’s what happened to me. I’m 65 now and I was only 23 at the time. It was 1978. I worked for a firm called White Industries at Ulan, out passed Mudgee.
We used to deliver coal and this night I cut through the back way between Ulan and Mudgee at about 2 O’clock in the morning. I loaded up and away I went. I was in my Kenworth and it was only about 3 or 4 degrees. I had big spotlights on the front of the truck that faced 45 degrees into the bush for Kangaroos.
In the distance I saw what I thought was a fella hitch hiking. He was on two legs walking away from me on the other side of the road. I thought at any moment this guy was going to put out his finger. I thought it was strange that he would be all the way out here. As I got closer, this thing was getting bigger and bigger. Then all of a sudden it turned and looked into the spotlights and its eyes lit up red like a sheep at night. They weren’t human eyes.
I was doing between 60 – 80kmphr and I thought I was going to hit the thing, and I didn’t know what to do, I didn’t want to jack knife the truck and just as I was about to make contact with it, it just turned and went into the bush.
It must have been more than 3 metres (9 - 10ft) tall, at least, because it was taller than my Kenworth bonnet. I weighed about 100kg at the time and I’m guessing this would have had to have weighed about 300kg. I only just missed it with the bulbar.
When he turned and looked at me, his eyes lit up bright red. Human eyes don’t do that. His arms were long. They came down near his knee. He was about 3 1/2ft wide. Covered in a black/brown coloured hair about 3 or 4” long and straight. It also had hair on its face except of the eye sockets and nose. It was lopping along with large strides. The thing that really got me was the eyes because I didn’t know what I was dealing with and it was big enough to jump on the bonnet.
I’ve never forgot it. It was the 30th of October, 1978. I’ve told this story to a lot of people. I spoke to a farmer out there one time and he had some experiences. He told me he had a flat tyre one time in his one ton ute with a cage on the back and a few animals inside. He couldn’t change it and went home thinking he’ll fix it in the morning. We he came back, the canvass was all shredded. A lot of the farmers out there were adamant there was something out there in that bush.
When it turned and looked at me, it’s like its head could almost turn all the way around. It was really interesting. The body didn’t turn as much as the head. It was like the Exorcist. I was astounded about how big it is. The eyes weren’t human. I was worried it had jumped on my truck. When I got to Mudgee, I stopped and checked all over, underneath and on top.
Someone said to me ‘Why didn’t you stop?’, I said you’ve got to be kidding me. It would be like trying to attack a brown bear. You wouldn’t have any chance. The eyes were an almond shape, very similar to sheep and they reflected red. It looked like a mixture between a human and an ape. I think it got a bit startled by the 100w spotlights.
I think because it’s on two legs is a reason why nobody wants to shoot one or run it over. People like us that have seen them aren’t wackos. We are just normal people. It’s always been imprinted in my mind. There’s no way I was going to stop. I was terrified for the next half an hour thinking it may have jumped on the truck. It does affect you. Since then, I no longer camp in the bush.
