Paul: Thanks for getting in touch with us. Your experience happened in 2021?
Maurice:
Yeah, it was during COVID time... probably 2020 or 2021.
Paul: I didn't realise you had your girlfriend on the phone as well, but that's fantastic because I'd love to speak to both of you. What I might do is, if it's okay, is just talk through what you were doing at the time and what happened, what you saw. And then I might come back and ask some more specific questions.
Maurice:
During that time, Sherry's auntie, she was making some Filipino food and we were delivering it to a friend's house in Wentworth Falls on Pritchard Street. What number was it, Cherry?
Cherry:
I think it's number four, Pritchard Street. It's close to, in front of the Grammar School.
Paul: Is that a fair way off the highway, or close to the highway?
Maurice:
It's pretty close to the highway. I think it's a few metres from the gate of the Grammar School.
Paul: What time of the day was this?
Maurice:
Around half past eight at night.
Cherry:
It could have been half past eight at night and it was raining and foggy.
Paul: Was it daylight saving or was it...
Maurice:
No, it was pretty dark then.
Cherry:
It was pretty dark.
Maurice:
Yeah, it was.
Paul: Okay, well take me through your experience.
Maurice:
So I went to the friend's house and I dropped off the food because they weren't answering the doorbell... so we just left the food there at the front door. And when I came back to the car I could smell, like a rotten-egg smell. And that led my eyes straight up to the telegraph pole, where I saw a big, black figure standing there. At the time I thought someone's dressed up in a fancy dress thing and a few seconds later I thought, "Oh no, this is something different." Because the eyes were red and they were glowing. And it's big. And it was, yeah, it was big, all right. And that's when I said to Cherry, "Quickly get in the car, we've got to go." And from there this thing just crouched down like a crab and it just charged at us actually in the car. And that's when I took off down the car really quickly and I could see from the side of the window when I was driving I could see it was chasing the car. And yeah, then I was a bit worried about it because I was speeding at the time, trying to outrun it. And I did like a move, I quickly stopped the car... and that's when it held the car and shook it, didn't it, Cherry?
Cherry:
Yeah.
Maurice:
Shook the car violently.
Cherry:
Scary.
Maurice:
And from there I just took off again really quickly and just went on my way. But during that time I thought it might have been just a ghost actually or something like that.
Paul: When you had the first kind of clue that something was there, there was that smell, right?
Maurice:
Yeah, it was really strong and...
Paul: Did you smell it as well, Cherry?
Cherry:
Yeah. It's just odd because it's raining, it's foggy, suddenly.
Maurice:
So the car actually went, got out of the car originally and it really smells when we came back.
Cherry:
Yeah.
Paul: In terms of that, you showed a photograph of where the pole is which is fantastic. You parked outside the house, and this was on the other side of the road from the house, would that be correct?
Maurice:
Yeah, right, the other side of the road, yeah.
Paul: You dropped the food off, came back, got inside and then you smelt the smell. Were you inside the car? No, you weren't inside the car when you first saw it?
Maurice:
Yeah, that's right. When I first saw it, I was at the end of the car, like where the boot was. And that's when I saw it and its red eyes was just, I think the red eyes (were) from the lights from the telegraph pole. I'm not too sure, but it's something that I've never seen before.
Paul: Cherry, when you saw the eyes, did you see the same colour and did you think it was glowing or was it reflecting, do you think? Or was it hard to tell?
Cherry:
It's hard to tell actually, because it's really foggy, like I just saw like a light. But yeah, for me, because I don't know about the yowie untill he mentioned it to me - it looked like Chewbacca to me. That's why he said that's a yowie because I haven't heard of yowie before.
Paul: Cherry, were you saying that when you were looking at this thing, it looked like Chewbacca to you?
Cherry:
Yeah, it was just quick like and I got nervous, I had goosebumps!
Paul: That's an interesting point because you didn't mention this in your report, but did you get a sense this thing had hair and was shaggy?
Maurice:
Well, you probably saw more than I did. I only saw like a big black shadow, like a big mass.
Cherry:
Yeah, it's like shaggy kind of, like for me it's like Chewie!
Paul: Like Chewbacca. That's a really good description. So perhaps you got a better look at the thing? Cherry… you would have been on the passenger side when you saw it or were you in the car when you saw it?
Cherry:
I'm in the passenger (side) already.
Paul: You were inside the car when you saw it or outside?
Cherry:
Inside already, like as soon as Maurice told me to go back inside the car that's when it's quick, like, because it's also raining.
Paul: Was it raining heavily or light?
Cherry:
Maybe light, light actually. It's raining before, like heavy rains and then started to get foggy and cold. It's like when I dropped the food.
Paul: This thing would have been relatively close though if you were just on the other side of the road, right? So it wasn't very far away.
Cherry:
Yeah, it wasn't too far away at all.
Paul: And when you're looking at this thing, you… thought it was, it was pretty tall?
Cherry:
Yeah, it's pretty tall.
Paul: Would you say it was taller than kind of a person… can you take a guess at how tall you think the thing was?
Maurice:
Maybe taller, a little bit taller than six foot maybe, because it's dark as well.
Paul: When you're looking at the thing, what was the shape, what was its outline, did it have an outline at all or, I mean, Cherry you said it looked like Chewy. So did it have that kind of a shape?
Cherry:
It had that shape, but not like really big like Chewie, like maybe a little bit skinnier, I don't know. It's just dark, but yeah, I'd say it's Chewy!
Paul: Did it have the shape of a person? Like did it have the shape of a human?
Cherry:
How do I say it? Like, it's like a, like, you know, a costume of, like, yeah, so it's like, yeah, a bit of, how do I say it? Not human, but there's arms and legs. Yeah. And yeah, it's like wearing a costume, something.
Paul: You both got in the car and you started to drive away and now kind of talk to me about, you said it, it dropped and then it started to move and it moved in a very odd way. Can you, can you describe that a bit more?
Maurice:
It went on like all four legs and it was pretty fast actually. And at one stage, I felt like it was like gliding in fact, like it wasn't using any legs or just gliding in the air.
Paul: And it came up, so you were going up Pritchard Street back towards the highway at this point?
Maurice:
No, it was going... What street is that? Pritchard going back from the intersection. Yeah. Yeah. So I was going back, I was going to go back on the highway, around the block actually.
Paul: You weren't going directly back to the highway?
Maurice:
No, not to the highway. No. Yeah. This thing looks like it came from the highway in fact.
Paul: Now, it dropped down and when you say all fours, I think was it running like, you know how a chimp can run on all fours? You see how a chimpanzee kind of, kind of, kind of moves. Was it like that?
Maurice:
No, it was a bit different to that. Yeah, it was really squatted down to the ground.
Paul: You're saying that its front was, you mentioned moving like a crab, but I'm trying to kind of, so it was sort of going sideways as opposed to coming in on the front towards you. Was that correct?
Maurice:
Yeah, that's right. Yeah.
Paul: Cherry, did you see it moving as well?
Cherry:
No, I got scared already. I said like, you mentioned I just closed the door and then the smell and when I saw this like chewy thing like I've got goosebumps like I just want to get out in there because it's really dark and foggy.
Paul: Did this thing both scare you both?
Maurice:
Yeah, it did.
Cherry:
Yeah.
Maurice:
And then we thought, it must have been a ghost or something. For a long time we just thought it must have been a ghost.
Cherry:
It's closer to the cemetery as well.
Paul: I did see that on the map that it's close to the cemetery. That's scary. So, so it was moving very odd, and you're going up the road. And this thing was, was basically what was it, whose side was it on? Was it coming up the, the, on your side, Cherry, or the other side, the other side of the vehicle?
Maurice:
What I saw was like a shadow on my side. Oh, okay, yeah. I didn't know if it was on my side or if it was on Cherry's side, but it was like a big shadow that I could see.
Paul: From the corner of your eye or did you actually turn and have a look at it in full?
Maurice:
Oh, I had to turn and had a look when I was driving and just to get away from it.
Paul: Was it making that same movement that you'd seen when it took off like in dropping? Did it seem to be doing the same thing or was it a different movement as it's right beside you?
Maurice:
It was a different kind of movement that it was doing.
Paul: Can you describe that? Was it, was it that gliding motion or was it like?
Maurice:
Gliding motion that it was doing.
Paul: How fast did you get the car up to when you were driving?
Maurice:
I think, oh, 70 to 75.
Paul: As you're driving at that speed, about how long was this thing beside you?
Maurice:
Oh, a couple of seconds, I think. Wasn't it Cherry?
Cherry:
Yeah.
Paul: And then you decided, did you then decide I'm going too fast so I better stop?
Maurice:
Yeah. And because of the weather condition and foggy and I didn't want to cause an accident or anything.
Paul: At that stage, did you think you left it behind or like, or you just felt I better stop because I'm going too fast?
Maurice:
A bit of both actually, like I was going too fast and also I thought this thing might, I might lose its tail actually. Whatever it was.
Paul: Then you stopped the vehicle and then what happened at that point?
Maurice:
And then it's, I think I grabbed the, yeah, the, what's the bull bar on the top? Could be.
Paul: What sort of vehicle were you driving?
Maurice:
It was a Mitsubishi Eclipse actually. Eclipse, yeah.
Paul: It grabbed the bull bar at the front?
Maurice:
No, actually it was the roof racks.
Paul: Oh, okay.
Maurice:
And it like shook the hell out of the roof racks.
Paul: Could you see it doing it or you could only just feel it?
Maurice:
I could feel it actually.
Paul: And it shook the whole car?
Maurice:
Yeah.
Paul: How many times?
Maurice:
Until Cherry screams and that's when I took off again.
Paul: Was it a violent shaking or was it like, so this thing was big and powerful?
Maurice:
Yeah, totally. I think it would have probably killed us if I got out of the car.
Paul: Then you drove off again. Did you talk to anybody about what had happened to you?
Maurice:
Not really. We just, we just thought it was just a ghost or something.
Cherry:
Yeah.
Paul: We didn't know what the hell it was or what did it do. Yeah. And then, then you mentioned it to your brother.
Maurice:
Yeah.
Paul: Just going back to the beginning again, you kind of looked over it. Did it just look dark or did you get a sense of any color at all or just dark?
Maurice:
Big black mass of figure actually that I could see. Yeah. Like it was hiding behind the telegraph pole, but it could, the eyes were actually changing as well. Like it was like greening as well. The red, the red diamond eyes actually.
Paul: Just backtrack on that. I remember you told me about the red glowing eyes. So they were sort of diamond shaped.
Maurice:
Yeah, diamond shape, definitely diamond shape.
Paul: [We have heard of this before] Did you say grinning?
Maurice:
It was grinning actually behind the telegraph pole. It was looking at me and it was grinning. You can sort of tell when the eyes have shifted and moved.
Paul: Did you see the mouth grinning?
Maurice:
I definitely saw the eyes and the diamond eyes, they were in that formation. Okay.
Paul: I don't think I'd like to see something big and dark on a foggy night with red eyes grinning at me. When it was standing behind the pole, did you see its arms distinctly or just again, you got a sense of the mass?
Maurice:
Just a dark mass actually.
Paul: When it dropped, did you see arms at that stage?
Maurice:
No, I didn't actually.
Paul: When it dropped, you just saw kind of this mass go down low and then start moving. You said like a crab, was it sort of doing that kind of like, but I imagine quite quickly, kind of that side to side waddle.
Maurice:
Yeah, a little bit like that. Yep.
Paul: But just definitely a very unusual way of running.
Maurice:
It is, yeah. And I was more concerned like if anyone was like walking a dog at that time of the night, they would have been killing with something like that.
Paul: Hey, well look, that's a fantastic story. Thanks, guys.
Maurice:
Thanks very much.
